COVENANT HOUSE NEW YORK
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BUILDING FUTURES: CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
FOR COVENANT HOUSE NEW
YORK
Mother/Child Crisis Center Gets New Look
NEW
YORK, NOV. 20 –
Covenant House New York announced today that it is celebrating the
re-opening of its Mother Child Crisis Center. To mark the
occasion, a celebratory ribbon cutting with city dignitaries and
special guests, will be held at the newly refurbished facility at
427 West 52nd Street on December 16, 2003 at 11am.
Under the
direction of Executive Director Bruce J. Henry and the Board of
Directors Covenant House New York has embarked upon an ambitious
capital campaign. The goal of this three-pronged capital
campaign is to revitalize, repair and enrich the two buildings that
house Covenant House New York’s Crisis Services. The
renovation and expansion program encompasses three vital projects,
the first of which is the Mother Child Crisis Center. The
Mother Child program has been at 52nd Street for the past
15 years. During that time over 25,000 young mothers and their
children have received food, clothing, and shelter, counseling and
housing assistance within its walls. It is the only shelter in
New York City that serves exclusively young mothers and their
children.
“These young
women need an opportunity to gain stability in their lives, have a
safe place to sleep, nutritious food to eat and a quality place to
care for their children while they pursue their futures. Our
goal is to give these young women and their children a new start
through access to employment and housing. The expansion and
renovation of this Mother Child facility ensures that these young
people will receive the care they deserve ” commented Bruce J.
Henry. The renovation and expansion of the Mother Child
provides more beds to the youth of New York City as well as a
brighter, warmer, newly furnished facility that has all the modern
amenities, including a state of the art computer lab.
The next
challenge is the 41st Street facility. The 41st
Street facility houses both the 24 hour Crisis Shelter and an
expansion of the long term transitional living program, Rights of
Passage. Serving over 5,000 homeless and runaway teenage youth
every year, the building is in desperate need of repair. As
Mr. Henry puts it, “it is time for more than a fresh coat of paint.
The hundreds of youth who seek shelter at 41st Street
every night deserve a warm, welcoming and safe environment. It
is our goal to expand the capacity of the Crisis Shelter and Rights
of Passage as we renovate the 41st Street structure.
It is programs such as these that make a difference to our kids.”
